Awal hidup

Shaffer Chimere Smith lahir di Camden, Arkansas. Kedua-dua ibu bapanya merupakan pemuzik, namun beliau dibesarkan ibunya setelah kedua-dua mereka bercerai semasa beliau masih kecil.[4] Ibunya juga berpindah ke Las Vegas, Nevada untuk mencuba nasib anak-beranak di sana.

Kerjaya muzik

Permulaan

Beliau memasuki pengajiannya di Las Vegas Academy di mana beliau memasuki suatu grup R&B bernama Envy di bawah nama GoGo, mereka sering muncul membuat persembahan di Showtime at the Apollo[5] serta The Cut oleh MTV[6][7] Grup ini berpisah pada tahun 2000. Smith kemudian masih meeruskan kerja menulis lagu untuk seberapa artis sebelum memulakan kerjaya solonya.

Nama pentas barunya Ne-Yo diberikan seorang kenalan sekerjanya Big D Evans[8] daripada watak Neo dalam filem The Matrix.[9]
