Mary Lutyens

Edith Penelope Mary Lutyens (1908 – 9 April 1999)^[1] adalah seorang pengarang Inggris yang utamanya dikenal karena karya-karya biografi otoritatif buatannya tentang filsuf Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Kehidupan awal

Ia adalah anak keempat dan bungsu dari arsitek Edwin Lutyens, dan istrinya Emily Bulwer-Lytton. Emily merupakan putri dari Robert Bulwer-Lytton, Viceroy India, dan cucu dari novelis-anggota majelis Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Pada masa kanak-kanak, Mary menjalani waktu dengan nenek pihak ibunya Edith, mantan vicereine, yang tinggal di Knebworth yang berjarak sekitar 30 mil dari London.

Sebagai hasil dari peminatan ibunya terhadap teosofi,^[2] Mary bertemu Krishnamurti saat masih kanak-kanak: ia mengenalnya dari 1911 sampai ia wafat pada 1986.

Pada 1920an, ayahnya mengerjakan gedung-gedung di Delhi. Mary mengunjungi India dengan ibunya dan datang ke Australia, singgah di The Manor, sebuah pusat yang dijalanklan oleh Charles Webster Leadbeater di Mosman, New South Wales,^[3] sementara Krishnamurti dan saudaranya Nitya singgah di rumah terdekat lainnya. Lutyens singgah disana sebanyak beberapa kali, yang kemudian memberikannya bahan untuk buku buatannya Krishnamurti: The Years of Awakening.^[4]
